Soap

DCP Successors Ltd., formerly Dominica Coconut Products (DCP) Ltd., was incorporated in Dominica in 1960. This was an evolution of a soap making tradition from World War 2 when the founder of DCP, Elias Nassief, a Lebanese migrant, began making soap from coconut oil in his courtyard. This was in response to a trade embargo and the unavailability of many products, including soap, caused by the presence of German U Boats in the Atlantic Ocean.

Real Soap was created by DCP Successors Ltd. to cater to those in need of quality, natural soaps with REAL benefits.

Resilience

DCP is known for its high-quality soaps and contract manufactured soap for well-known international brands including Palmolive, Dial, Tone, Protex and Jergens. Due to this success, an American multinational acquired DCP in 1995 and successfully operated the plant until 2015, when the plant was severely damaged by Tropical Storm Erika. The heirs of Elias Nassief, concerned that Dominica would lose the art and skills of soap making, led a group of Caribbean investors to acquire the plant in May 2017. Unfortunately, In September 2017 Hurricane Maria caused further damage to the plant. Through the dedication and devotion of the plant’s long-standing employees, production eventually commenced in February 2018.

Craftmanship

Traditional soap making is artisanal and the soap maker, a craftsman. He is akin to the viticulturist (wine maker) or master rum blender. The soap boiling process (or saponification as it is known) is a 36-hour process in which the soap mass is assessed and tweaked by the soap boiler using his sense of taste, smell and touch to bring the soap to a balanced completion.

With a 80-year tradition of soap making in Dominica, our artisans are talented and skilled craftsmen. Along with the soap boilers are loyal and skilled personnel who lost their jobs when the factory closed after Tropical Storm Erika. They have returned to work to practice their craft and to help bring an iconic industry, important to the island’s economy, back to life.

Revival

The revival of DCP after two devastating storms is a true testament to the resilience of Dominica and the Caribbean, a region vulnerable to natural disasters. DCP Successors, the only authentic soap producer of scale in the region, is committed to producing high quality soaps made from Caribbean Coconut oil and once again becoming a manufacturer of the highest quality soaps. We believe there is a future for regional manufacturing of products that cater to the needs and aspirations of Caribbean people.

Today we are proud to continue nearly 80 years of soap making in the Nature Island of Dominica with the launch of REAL Soap.

Real is the story of the revival of coconut oil, Caribbean manufacturing and the region’s resiliency while celebrating the stories, memories and moments of growing up in the Caribbean.
